Hello! I’m Jess – mama to Reese and Kiera, wife to Rich, an environmental scientist, a nature lover and wellness broker. My passion is helping people and nature, both in my professional career and in my personal life. I have spent my career helping bridge the gap between commercial development and preserving nature. Essential oils have become my way to do the same between all the commercial products in our home and creating simple, products on my own. This blog shares my journey to a more natural lifestyle using essential oils, including the science behind essential oils, DIY recipes, tips, and ways to save money using plant-based alternatives.
First, let me share why chemical-free living means so much to me, so that you can really see where I'm coming from.
Since college, I have battled with food allergies and chronic anxiety & depression. I have taken medications and supplements, and spent so much time trying to find a way out of the misery. Over the course of a decade, I did every wild cleanse (which I’m convinced the masters cleanse is the most masochistic thing on the earth) and tried every diet. Paleo, Raw, Vegan, Raw Vegan, Gluten/Dairy Free, F*#$ It Nothing Works. You get the picture. I’d feel better but then fall off the diet wagon and feel like a failure. I realized that these outrageous “diets” were not a sustainable lifestyle, and certainly did not help improve my mental state.
So I started using what I knew about researching science and applied it to researching my own health. The gut and the brain are connected, upset gut = depressed mind. How did other people change their lifestyle to support a healthy mind and gut? I stumbled onto Intuitive Eating (by Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch) and essential oils. I applied these principles to the way I looked at food, at movement and the products that I use on my body and in my home.
The first month after reading their book, I still had bouts of depression and an upset digestive system but I was figuring out how to listen to my body and quiet my mind. I spent time learning how to use essential oils for emotional support and around the house. I cleared out the cleaning products, and one by one replaced them with Young Living products or natural DIY creations.
The second month, I felt like I was getting the hang of it. I learned that intuitive eating and movement, and clearing chemicals from my lifestyle were the answer for me. I noticed how applying a blend of vetiver, lavender, cedarwood & frankincense essential oils decreased my anxiety and improved my sleep. My son slept through the night the first time I diffused lavender for him. Sold. My husband noticed how much money we were saving (mostly because I wasn't being pulled in the Target vortex and spending loads of $$ each time I went in for dishwasher soap)!
Now, I’m passionate about spreading a whole approach to health that includes good food, natural products and lots of love. That's why I am here pouring my heart into building this community. I never would have thought I'd be doing this a couple years ago but here I am. (Note: I am not advocating that we all ditch western medicine and its benefits. It's one part of the puzzle.) I love helping my clients find solutions through Young Living essential oils and essential oil-infused products.
One common theme I encounter when sharing my story with others is most people don't feel like they have the bandwidth to make these changes. They feel overwhelmed and burdened with the idea of adding one more thing to their to-do list. Oof. I get it.
But here's a little secret: make the commitment, believe in it and the rest will happen on its own.
Life is funny like that. ;)
Because when you BELIEVE in something, you will do everything in your power to make it happen. That doesn't mean you won't stumble and get frustrated along the way (you should've seen me when I was starting out...my mind was about to explode with all this information).
It just means that whatever happens -- good or bad -- it will propel you toward your ultimate goal. Maybe that's a little "woo woo" for you, but that kind of optimism and grit has never steered me wrong.
Whether you're just starting out or you've already got it all figured out, I know what it feels like.
But the real point I want to remind you of is that no matter how you feel or where you're at right now, creating a natural lifestyle is SO possible. We will learn a little bit together, and I'll give you some easy ways to slowly start moving into a natural lifestyle. Not scary, not expensive, and will ease your mind and your body. ❤️ ❤️
I began creating naturally organic skincare products after the birth of my son, which prompted me to start questioning what he ingested while nursing. A couple years later, by jess anderson was born, and I, now the mother of 2 have married my passion to my purpose, combining nourishing shea and cocoa butter with dreamy essential oils to create truly healthy skincare products. They’re all over in the Etsy shop! This crazy twist also made it so I️ could grow my business in new ways. Sometimes good things happen in ways we least expect it!
