All Things Thieves Online Class

As health and wellness are on the rise, you will see many more companies put products on the shelf that appear to be safe and read “all natural,” but are they really all that safe?

In this class, I will break down some of the misleading information out there and give you alternatives you can feel confident using at an affordable price! I’ll even throw in a few bonus DIY recipes. Get ready to shocked when you learn about what is lurking in your cabinets!

Even though some naturally occurring things in nature can be harmful, I want to assure you that throughout this class, when I refer to products or ingredients as "natural," I mean they are NOT harmful to your health and they are completely safe for you and your family. We will talk about all of my favorites from Young Living and I can assure you they are very safe and also very effective. It's an easy ditch and switch in our house and I know it will be for yours as well.

As the world becomes more aware of what is and isn’t healthy, “all natural” and “toxin-free” products are becoming more and more popular. But are those products really safe? Take a minute and go to your app store and download the app called “Think Dirty.” Sign in and let it take you through the tutorial on how to use the app. I will have you use it throughout class to get more familiar with the products in your house.

The Think Dirty app is an application you can use to scan products and see how they rate in terms of safety. If anything rates a six or higher, I don't touch it with a ten foot pole. If it rates between a 3-5, I check out the ingredient/s that are making it rate that high and also look them up on the The Environmental Working Group website to see why that ingredient is given a higher rating. If that ingredient is the LAST ingredient listed on the product label, I know there is only a small amount in the product. Then I make my own judgment call on whether I want to use the product or not. Products rated 1-2 are completely safe and are my top picks.

If that feels uber time-consuming, it is a great idea to find a company that has your health in mind and is committed to producing products that are safe and effective.

Enter Young Living.

Just for fun, I want you to collect one product from your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. For example, all-purpose cleaner, shampoo, and laundry detergent.

Look at those results!

Thank you for being here on this journey with me. xo

After you download the guide, I want you to collect one product from your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. For example, all-purpose cleaner, shampoo, and laundry detergent. Have them within reach as you go through this guide. Also, take a minute to download the Think Dirty app on your phone.

Why I chose Young Living?

My education and real-world experience is in environmental science and sustainability, so it's no surprise that YL's sustainability practices immediately struck me as unique and a movement that I wanted to support, wholeheartedly. YL operates their farms around the world to bring us essential oils that are from their native environment. In Oman, Sacred Frankincense is being distilled for the first time.  Gary Young and the team at YL have worked so closely with the people of Oman to create a strong, trusting relationship that YL is the first and only company to have permission to export Sacred Frankincense to the west. Wow! Check out more about their farms HERE.

Seed to Seal guarantee...what does that mean?

Young Living Essential Oils has been around for over 21 years. There are many other essential oil companies to choose from these days (and we do mean many); we see essential oils at almost every store we walk into.

So what makes us so different?

  • We are the ONLY essential oil company that owns its own farms or partners with farms that work up to our standards.
  • We test the dirt for pesticides.
  • We test the water for additives and toxins.
  • We harvest our own seeds to ensure there are no genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
  • We use essential oils as natural pesticides on our crops.
  • We harvest our plants according to the highest yield of potent oil--sometimes during the day, during the night, by hand, by tool, by machinery.
  • We distill on-site in our own distilleries, which are made of medical grade stainless steel, use low heat, slow steam processing to retain therapeutic properties of the oil, and we distill only one time. We test our own oils several times throughout the distillation process and after. We also bottle our own oils. All other essential oil companies buy their oils already distilled and have no quality or purity controls.

You are getting the best of the best when it comes to essential oils!  Check out this VIDEO that tells you all about Young Living's Seed to Seal promise.

14 Day Challenge

Alright, grab that PSK, open it up, get those oils out, set that diffuser up, we are going to play, play, play!

First things first, no one is an oils expert, you read that right, not even me. I learned by reading through our groups, books, and experimenting with my oils! There are three ways to use the oils, aromatic (diffusing), topical (on your body), and ingesting (in your body).

Start this challenge by setting up your diffuser, picking a couple of oils from your starter kit and diffuse away!

*Remember, start with like 3/4/5 drops MAX, you can always add more if you want. There is no right or wrong when it comes to diffusing, play around, see what you are drawn too.

Need to wake up? Lemon + Peppermint are an amazing combo!
Want to rest? Lavender + Stress Away
Dreaming of a beachy island? Peppermint + Stress Away
Respiratory support? RC/Raven + Lemon

The possibilities are endless, have fun!
Comment with your favorite combo!
_____________________________________________________________________
There are lots of simple things that you can do in five minutes or less to crack open the seals on your bottles of magic.

1- Smell the magic: open the bottle and smell the oil, keep in mind it will smell differently when it's on your skin and in the diffuser. Why is this? Well just like music, oils are made up of different notes, top, middle and base. Which is why we use oils in all different ways, so freakin cool!

2- Hand Cupping: place a drop of the oil in the palm of your hand, flatten your hand, the take your other hand and rotate the oils clockwise (this gets the molecules in the oils spinning, helps them come to life) cover your nose and mouth and inhale. You can also rub any leftovers on your wrists, back of your ears, feet, down your spine. If the oil feels hot, add some carrier oil (coconut, grapeseed, olive oil etc)

3- Diffuser jewelry: you can drop oils right onto the jewelry and diffuse on the go. Some of our favorites are lava stones, leather, cork, felt, these absorb the oils the best.

Oils & Emotions Online Class

Oils & Emotions Online Class

Earlier this week I promised a more in depth online class presenting everything you need to know about using oils for emotional health. In case you missed the other presentation, here it is Balancing Healthy Emotions presentation >>>

This class is all about emotions. Emotions can be difficult and even scary. It is so much easier to suppress emotions than to recognize, feel, and process them. However, the ability to recognize, feel, process, and release emotions will enable you to function in a more positive and successful state so you can live free to create the life you desire.

We learn about and develop emotions from birth, through early childhood development and onward. Which means that helping children recognize emotions and learn to process emotions is one of the most powerful gifts you can give as a parent or caregiver.

It also means that if you didn’t develop and utilize effective techniques to process your emotions early on, you may have some catching up to do. Don’t worry. I will give you easy tools to use so you can learn how to process your emotions in a healthy way.

Creative Development // Growing Happy Kids >>>

In this class, I will share popular essential oils that can be used with various emotions. I will also share different techniques to make using your oils more effective for those of all ages. Throughout the class we share where these oils should be applied topically. We used the alarm points listed for each oil from the book "Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils" by Carolyn L. Mein, D.C.

Oh baby! Explore Essential Oils for Baby and Mom-to-be!

Are you expecting? Or do you know someone who is? You may wonder if using oils during pregnancy or with littles is safe. If you use them wisely and pay attention to the guidelines, you can feel good about using them, and from one mama to another, they can be a lifesaver! I used them throughout mine for aches + pains (surprisingly, black pepper is amazing and marjoram, too), nausea (hello, ginger!), mama acne (purification and melrose) and to keep my immune system strong I used thieves everywhere. I included some of my favorite "little" recipes below, and this presentation gets right to the heart of the matter. xo

I made this baby starter package for a dear friend after she had her new baby. The package included sleepytime foot rub, boo boo spray, thieves spray (to clean all those toys that go straight into the mouth), diaper rash cream (no petroleum products!), lavender essential oil and a "happy mama" roll on for her. All items were natural, organic, and specifically diluted for little bodies. Except for the happy mama roller, that was just for her 😍.

Make this as a gift or for your family. Or maybe DIY isn't your thing? Check out this product line >>>

Once liquefied, remove from the heat and let cool. Add in the essential oils, adn put the cream in the refrigerator to bring it back to a solid state. Before mixing, let it sit out at room temperature to slightly soften. Using an electric mixer, whip it until fluffy. Using a wooden spatula, transfer to a glass jar.

Oils & Scripture

Did you know that there are at least 33 different essential oils or aromatic oil-producing plants mentioned in the Bible? There are over 600(!!!) references to essential oils and/or the aromatic plants from which they were extracted in the Bible. Essential oils are also referred to in the Bible as fragrances, odors, ointments, aromas, perfumes or sweet savors. Incense is mentioned 68 times in the Bible. In 54 of these, the oils of frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, and onycha are indicated! There are four references to the oil of joy or gladness and how oils rejoice the heart.

Using essential oils is a very personal decision much like the beliefs and values each of us hold. We encourage that you explore Scripture, verses or phrases shared in this presentation with kindness and respect. We each walk a spiritual path unique to our hearts and our souls- it is sacred space. Our words can lift us up or take us down. This presentation aims to lift each other up as we discover how oils can enhance our experiences in prayer, worship and study. Practice kindness.

We cannot talk about oils without mentioning plants. After all, oils are the liquid gold of plants. On the third day of creation,  “the earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a third day.”  (Genesis 1:12-13) What a delight to read that God declared plants are good! We can find about 600 references to essential oils or fragrant plants in the Bible.  Oils were used for 3 main purposes: anointing, healing and worship through the use of incense. The first time oils are mentioned is in Exodus 25:6 when God calls upon His people to bring an offering. “oil for the light, and spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense”.

When we read on, there are stories of oils and aromatic plants being treasured as more valuable than gold and silver. They are frequently stored with royal treasures (2 Kings 20:13), brought into the holy space of worship in the Tabernacle in Exodus 30:23-25), and used to anoint King Saul and David. Most treasured of all are the essential oils bestowed in celebration and worship of Jesus Christ. Baby Jesus was gifted Frankincense and Myrrh. Later, during his ministry, he was anointed twice with Spikenard.

Fragrance was an integral part of Biblical ceremonies and often something God required of His believers. Moses added spices and fragrant oils to pure olive oil (Exodus 30). Psalms 45 tells us the Messiah will be clothed with the scent of myrrh, aloes and cassia. Paul writes in Philippians 4:18, about gifts that are a “a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God.” Incense was another form of fragrance, burned twice daily in the Tabernacle and later in the Jerusalem temple.

These essential oils of the Bible were more than just for scent; they were also used for healing. In Ezekiel 47:12, it is written ““Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will be for food, and their leaves shall be for medicine.” They were often incorporated into ointments and salves.

But that’s not all!  These oils also brought joy and gladness to the heart (Psalm 45:7-8, Proverbs 27:9, Isaiah 61:3 and Hebrews 1:9).  The essential oils of the Bible are high in specific constituents that can actually support emotional and spiritual well-being on a cellular level.

There is also science backing up the strength and the value of the Biblical oils. The three most dominant compounds of the Biblical oils are: Sesquiterpenes, Monoterpenes, and Phenols. There are also ketones, aldehydes, and esters in these oils. Each of them offer benefits for our spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical well being.

  • Sesquiterpenes are oxygenating, mood elevating, and deprogram miswritten or garbled codes in the DNA. This compound can stimulate the pineal gland to enhance the spiritual experience. They are also strong supporters of the immune system and boost the body’s natural defenses.
  • Monoterpenes, much like sesquiterpenes, are hostile to microbes and reprogram cells with correct information. This compound can also access the pineal gland to increase the spiritual experience. They are also strong supporters of the immune system and boost the body’s natural defenses.
  • Phenols, ketones, and aldehydes are antiseptic, cleanse receptor sites, and detoxify our bodies whereas esters are calming. Esters help reduce stress and release emotions. Phenols can also support  healthy hormonal balance and body function.

Here's a presentation centered on the specific oils found in the Bible...

Thank you for being here on this journey with me. xo

Spring Cleaning Series // Part 5 - The Bedroom

I keep a cute little bottle of the thieves spray on my nightstand. To keep our bedroom clean and healthy, I spray a light mist onto our sheets before making the bed and then on top of the comforter once it’s made.

You can spray it directly on your dog’s beds, too. Side note-it works great to easily clean up pet accidents, too.

Diffusing thieves in our bedroom, along with using it as a cleaning spray helps to boost our immune and respiratory systems while keeping us on the healthy side of living!

Try this out on your carpet and mattresses...

Carpet/Matress Freshener: Mix 1 cup baking soda and 5-15 drops EO (purification is amazing!) in a 1/2 pint wide-mouth glass jar. Sprinkle on carpet and let sit for a minimum of 15 minutes. Or, you can let it sit overnight, and then vacuum up!. You can also use this on soiled mattresses, as it helps to remove odor and absorb wetness.

Pet Deodorizing Spray: Combine 10 drops cedarwood, 5 drops tea tree, 1/2 tsp. alcohol, and distilled water in a 2 oz. glass spray bottle. Spritz on carpets, dog beds and throughout the room for odor.

Spring Cleaning Series // Part 4 - The Windows & Floors

Have you ever realized how dirty your couches actually are?! Ladies & Gents -- How many times have you found your little one using a pen on your couches? Ever spilled red wine on your favorite couch or chair?

Thank goodness for Thieves Cleaner! In our house, we have saved the day (again and again!) when we use Thieves Cleaner to clean pen, food, daily dirt and grime and other tiny human messes off our furniture. Another great way to use Thieves Cleaner is to use it to spot clean the carpet from both pet and human messes. Just spray and clean like you would any other carpet cleaner! It’s so nice knowing that there aren’t any harsh chemicals going into surfaces of the places that we spend a good chunk of time on.

We also love using Thieves Cleaner (diluted 30:1) for a general cleaner on our toys and other surfaces that get dirty. With the same ratios, we dust our picture frames and other glass, wipe down any shelves, and clean the windows and mirrors too! The options with this cleaner are endless!

Because Thieves household cleaner is naturally derived with plant- based ingredients, and provides exceptional home cleaning and purifying power, it's the only cleaner we trust in our home now. We use it on every surface of our home including our windows and floors.

We HATE streaks on our windows (who doesn’t?) and seriously questioned if Thieves could be used on our windows, but tried and true it leaves the windows clean and completely streak free! It leaves our windows looking more crystal clear than any other window cleaner we've ever used!

We also have to admit that mopping has always been something dreaded, but not anymore! Now we also don't have to worry about the kids or pets eating off the floor.

What about mirrors? It will definitely clean mirrors and glass in general. The scent is so much better than anything we used previously and we love that we can clean with our kids in the room with me and not worry about what they are breathing in!

Also, try these recipes...

Glass, Mirror & Hardwood Cleaner: Mix 1 capful Thieves cleaner, 5 drops citrus fresh EO, 1 tsp white vinegar and 3 cups water in a spray bottle.

Carpet Freshener: Mix 1 cup baking soda and 5-15 drops EO (purification is amazing!) in a 1/2 pint wide-mouth glass jar. Sprinkle on carpet and let sit for a minimum of 15 minutes. Or, you can let it sit overnight, and then vacuum.

Pet Deodorizing Spray: Combine 10 drops cedarwood, 5 drops tea tree, 1/2 tsp. alcohol, and distilled water in a 2 oz. glass spray bottle. Spritz on carpets, dog beds and throughout the room for odor.

Spring Cleaning Series // Part 3 - The Laundry

The laundry room is probably the most neglected rooms in the house when it comes to cleaning. It’s likely the room that needs the most love too with the constant piles of dirty clothes, wet towels, and let's not forget the musty, mildew smells that seems to come from the washer and dryer and clothes we left in there for a few...days....oops!

Lucky for you, I've got some great tips on how to clean your laundry room, from top to bottom, and keep it fresh from here on out!

Take the Laundry Swap Dare:

  • Toxic laundry detergent // swap // Thieves laundry detergent
  • Toxic dryer sheets // swap // wool dryer balls with lavender or lemongrass essential oil

Let's start with Thieves Household Cleaner:

- Create a great, multi-purpose cleaning spray using a 1:30 ratio of cleaner to water in a spray bottle. Use this to spray down the outside of the washer and dryer, any counter tops, sinks, shelves and any pesky marks on the walls from the constant traffic of kids and husbands coming in and out and many, many loads of laundry being done.

- Washers can accumulate mold and mildew, especially if it's a front-load washer and even more so if your laundry room is on the small side. When you start to notice your washer giving off an icky smell, even after washing a load, it's time to check the plastic linings just inside of the washer door. There's a good chance you will find some pretty gross slime looking right back at you. Use your handy spray cleaner that you made to spray all around the inside of that plastic lining, the inside of the drum, and even the door on the inside. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. Come back to it and wipe it down. Depending on how dirty it is, you may need to do this a second time. Be prepared to be grossed out at what comes off onto the rag. Once you're done wiping it down, deodorize the entire washer by adding a cup of vinegar directly into the washer and a capful of Thieves cleaner where your detergent goes. Run an empty load on your hottest setting. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how fresh your washer smells once it's done. PRO TIP: After each load, leave your washer door open for about an hour to help dry out the inside to prevent more mold/mildew from growing. Also, it's wise to do a good clean and deodorizing at least once every 3 months or so.

- Young Living has come out with an amazing Thieves laundry soap that is 6X concentrated, meaning you only need about 1 tablespoon of detergent per load, saving you so much time and money! Plus, is smells amazing! You can also use Thieves cleaner as a detergent as well! Just add a capful to your detergent cup and wash away!

- To freshen your clothes without having to use the toxic dryer sheets that we used to by in the stores, just invest in a few wool dryer balls, add a few drops of your favorite YL essential oil and toss it in the dryer with your next load. Your clothes will thank you. So will your family. If you don't have the wool dryer balls, you can just add a few drops of EOs to a damp rag and toss it in with the clothes. Easy!

- One of my favorite floor cleaners is a combination of 1 cup vinegar, 2 drops of Purification EO, 2 drops of Lemon EO and about a teaspoon of Thieves dish soap... and a bucket full of hot water. Your floors will shine and it will deodorize your entire laundry room.

Now, let’s talk oils and laundry!

Wash your clothes using Young Living Thieves Laundry Soap*

*With a plant-based formula, Thieves Laundry Soap gently and naturally washes your clothes, cleaning them without any chemical or synthetic residue. Natural enzymes and powerful essential oils add to the formula’s strength to leave your clothes fresh and clean with a light citrus scent.

• Put 6-8 drops of the oil of your choice on your wool balls and throw them in with your laundry (lemongrass is my fave to use) Your clothes will come out smelling heavenly! Check out this video!

Also while we are in the laundry room... What about those pesky stains? I use Lemon EO or thieves cleaner on everything! Even for getting stains out... I’ve successfully used thieves cleaner to remove red wine stains, chocolate, juice, and all the nastiness that ends up on clothing! Just put a little thieves cleaner on the stain, gently scrub with an old toothbrush, let set for 5-10 min and throw it in the washer on cold!!

You and your laundry room will feel SO MUCH BETTER after you do these easy steps... and after a good deep clean to start out with, it will be even easier to keep your appliances clean (and keep them from breaking down) and your clothes fresh every day! You'll actually LOVE going in there to wash your mountains of laundry ;)

Spring Cleaning Series // Part 2 - The Bathroom

The bathroom is often home to our nastiest business and let’s be honest, our least favorite space to clean. Thieves Cleaner makes the bathroom a less scary and gross place for me, because I can utilize one bottle of cleaner and a few oils to accomplish every single cleaning chore!

Take the Bathroom Swap Dare:

  • Bar Soap // swap // Sandalwood Lemon Bar Soap
  • Conditioner // swap // Copaiba Vanilla Conditioner that I use a pea size amount as leave in instead.
  • Toxic toothpaste // swap // AromaBright toothpaste that lasts way longer than traditional toothpaste, only need a pea size!
  • Expensive and toxic face cleaner and lotion // swap // $5 a month using essential oils!

Tried and True Oil Recipes!

Tile and Grout

Add 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 1/2 cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray tile and grout. Let sit for a couple of minutes. Use a small brush to get stains out. You may use less water for stronger concentration as needed.

Toilets: Mix 1⁄4 cup of Baking Soda with 1⁄2 capful of Thieves cleaner. Apply to toilet brush. Clean.

Tub Scrub: Take 1⁄2 cup of Baking Soda, 2 capfuls of Thieves Cleaner, 1 T water, 5 drops of Thieves oil, and 5 drops of Lemons. Mix to a paste. Scrub your bathtub with it. Then wipe clean with water. Apply generic Thieves Cleaner Spray and apply!

Mirror Cleaner/Window Cleaner: Place 1 capful of Thieves cleaner in a spray bottle with 4 cups of water. Spray down windows (or any glass) as you would with your "regular" glass cleaner.

Toilet Cleaning Tabs: Mix 2 cups Baking Soda, 2/3 cups Citric Acid, 30 drops Citrus Fresh EO in a spray bottle. Mix all ingredients slowly by spraying with water until wet sand consistency. Add the oils. Place into silicone molds and let it dry overnight. Store in an airtight glass container. When ready to use drop one of them into the water tank of your toilet.

Sanitizing Wipes: Cut a roll of paper towels in half and take out the cardboard piece. Remove enough paper towel sheets for your roll to fit into your container of choice. Using an empty cleaned circular container. Pour 1/2 cup water and 1 tbsp of Dr. Bonner's castile soap in the bottom of the container then gently swirl to mix it. Drop in 2 capfuls of Thieves cleaner then quickly insert your paper towel roll into the container. Let it sit for a few hours to allow the mixture to soak through the towels.

Pro Tip: The amount of water you use depends on the brand of paper towels. If you buy thin paper towels then try a little less water so your wipes won’t be sopping wet.

Spring Cleaning Series // Part 1: The Kitchen

Oh, the kitchen! The place we spend most of our time when we're at home. It's a continual cycle of getting it messy and then cleaning it up. Oils can be used as an alternative to traditional cleaning chemicals in the home. You can literally start swapping out every single chemical cleaning toxin in your home to live a purer lifestyle, and you can do it without breaking the bank!

I use the Thieves Household Cleaner on everything in our kitchen. A little bit goes such a long way and it's amazing for the daily cleanups and the deep cleans, plus everything in between! It’s refreshing to know that I can spray the counter and appliances and not have to worry about toxins floating in the air and coming into contact with our food.

My favorite use is as an all-purpose cleaner. In a 16 oz. glass spray bottle, put two capfuls of Thieves cleaner and fill the rest up with distilled water. It's my absolute favorite for countertops - smells fresh, safe for little hands and for their food, and cuts through grease easily.

Who really gets the chance to deep clean?? Let's be honest here - still, I love that I can spray everything down and feel confident I'm walking away from a germ-free kitchen. Also, great to use for minor spills on floors, for the trash can lid, and for wiping down the stove. Since there is Thieves essential oil in the thieves cleaner, it aids in boosting our immune systems as well!

Let's continue with our theme, and take the kitchen swap dare! Here are some ideas for your kitchen:

  • Toxic foaming hand soaps // swap // Thieves & Lavender hand soap
  • Toxic surface cleaners (all) // swap // Thieves Household Cleaner (this one bottle cleans everything and will last you the entire year!)
  • Toxic dish soap // swap // Thieves dish soap
  • Fruit & Veggie Sprays // swap // Thieves Fruit & Veggie Soak &/or Spray
  • Sanitizing Wipes // swap // Thieves Wipes
  • Waterless Hand Purifier // swap // Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier (goodbye triclosan!)
  • Non-stickPots & Pans // swap // Titanium Pot, Pand & Glass Lids
  • Plastic steamers // swap // Glass Steamer

The lovely ladies leading our team, The Essential Collective, have a great page about all the reasons you should swap out these kitchen items.

Got Questions?

Let's break down all your questions!

ARE YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS CERTIFIED ORGANIC?

Young Living prides itself on offering the purest and most effective essential oils possible, and they are often asked if their oils are certified organic. The organic certification, while important, is far from the only standard of quality by which to judge essential oils. Young Living practices a unique Seed to Seal® quality process that goes beyond the current organic standard in many ways. At Young Living, they don’t just rely on others to verify the purity of their oils. Young Living works directly with their farms, growers, and distillers to ensure the quality, integrity, and authenticity of every product produced. Their passion and commitment is to produce 100-percent pure, unadulterated essential oils that retain all of the natural constituents and therapeutic properties nature intended. Young Living's Seed to Seal process ensures the purest therapeutic-grade essential oils through careful monitoring of every step of essential oil production—from the time a seed is sourced until the oil is sealed in the bottle. Every batch of essential oils, whether cultivated on their own farms or by one of their carefully vetted partner growers, is rigorously tested and subjected to careful review through every step of production and meets or exceeds industry safety and purity standards. Young Living’s dedication to quality ensures that they provide pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils with the complete, optimal blend of plant constituents to provide maximum potency and results. As millions of satisfied members and customers across the globe can testify, Young Living sets the standard for purity and quality in the essential oil industry. While standards and guidelines can vary and be modified, Young Living's dedication to providing the safest, most beneficial essential oils in the world will never change.

DOES YOUNG LIVING USE PESTICIDES?

Young Living does not use traditional pesticides at their farms or their partner farms. Instead they use essential oils as natural pest repellents on their crops. Both Young Living's farm practices and finished products are held to strict standards, and with the measures they have in place, Young Living feels confident that they offer their members the best, purest products available.

WHAT TESTS DOES YOUNG LIVING CONDUCT ON THEIR ESSENTIAL OILS?

Young Living uses its own internal labs and third-party facilities to verify that Young Living purity and potency standards are met. Each batch of essential oil is sent through six rigorous tests and must meet established quality benchmarks to pass through successfully.

  • Mass Spectrometer—Identifies the names of each constituent (plant chemicals) in the oil.
  • Gas Chromatograph—Measures the percentage of constituents in the oil.
  • Refractive Index—Measures the density of the oil using a concentrated beam of light.
  • Specific Gravity—Measures how heavy the oil is as compared to water.
  • Flash Point—Ignites the oil and tests it against standard flash temperatures.
  • Optical Rotation—Measures the molecular structure of the oil.

Once the tests are complete, the results are compared to the vast library of information Young Living has amassed over 20 years. This library of oil data is unmatched in the industry. If the incoming oils do not meet the established profile, they are rejected and not allowed to be bottled as a Young Living product.

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF YOUNG LIVING OILS?

Young Living’s essential oils do not expire and will maintain their integrity, efficacy, and beneficial properties virtually indefinitely, provided they are stored properly in a dark-glass bottle, upright and tightly sealed, out of sunlight, and in cool temperatures.

CAN I STORE ESSENTIAL OILS IN PLASTIC CONTAINERS?

Young Living recommends that members store essential oils in their original containers. However, if you would like to store your oils in different containers, they recommend using dark-colored glass. Young Living does not recommend storing undiluted essential oils in plastic containers because many essential oils are incompatible with plastic material.

ARE ESSENTIAL OILS SAFE FOR USE ON OR AROUND ANIMALS?

Many people successfully use Young Living products with their animals. They offer Animal Scents™ products that are designed for use with animals, including an Animal Scents oil collection.

ARE YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS DISTILLED MULTIPLE TIMES?

Each batch of Young Living essential oil is only processed/distilled from plants once before bottling.

HOW ARE YOUNG LIVING ESSENTIAL OILS CREATED?

Essential oils are aromatic liquids distilled or extracted from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, fruit, and seeds. Most Young Living essential oils are extracted using steam distillation. Their food-grade stainless steel distillers are based on a state-of-the-art design that uses very low pressure and low temperature, which is critical for preserving all of the fragile therapeutic constituents of essential oils. Plants are steam distilled in small batches for extended periods using a special low-pressure, low-heat vertical steam technology. Young Living's citrus oils are cold pressed from the rinds of their designated fruit, such as bergamot, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon. No solvents or synthetic chemicals of any kind are used or added in either method.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE ALLERGIC TO ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils do not generally contain the proteins responsible for allergic reactions, which minimizes the likelihood of an allergic reaction. However, individual sensitivities do vary, and people can still experience sensitivities to essential oils. When using a new essential oil, dilution and a skin spot test is a good idea to ensure that you do not experience any sensitivity to that particular oil.

HOW MANY DROPS ARE IN A 5-ML AND 15-ML BOTTLE OF ESSENTIAL OIL?

There are approximately 85 drops (1 teaspoon) in a 5-ml bottle and approximately 250 drops (1 tablespoon) in a 15-ml bottle.

ARE ESSENTIAL OILS STILL EFFECTIVE AND SAFE TO USE IF THEY HAVE BEEN LEFT IN THE HEAT?

UV exposure will cause the greatest damage to the constituents of essential oils, and heat and light combined will affect them even more quickly. If a package is delivered and sitting on the porch for several hours (or even a few days), but the oils are not directly exposed to UV light, the efficacy of the oils will not be compromised. If the oil is hot, cool it before using. Prolonged exposure to light will cause the oil constituents to change or diminish.

CAN ESSENTIAL OILS BE USED NEAT (WITHOUT DILUTION) ON THE SKIN?

Some essential oils can be used neat on the skin. All label instructions should be followed. Young Living's labels indicate when an essential oil should be diluted. If it is an essential oil that you have never used, dilution and a skin spot test is a good idea to ensure that you do not experience any sensitivity to that particular essential oil.

DO ESSENTIAL OILS CONTAIN THE VITAMINS PRESENT IN THE PLANT?

Due to the distillation process, there are no appreciable amounts of vitamins in essential oils.

DOES YOUNG LIVING PROVIDE TESTING REPORTS FOR ITS ESSENTIAL OILS?

Every batch of Young Living essential oil goes through stringent GC/MS testing to ensure their strict standards are met. These reports are proprietary and regarded as trade secrets.

DOES YOUNG LIVING PRACTICE SUSTAINABLE GROWING METHODS?

Yes, Young Living is committed to being responsible stewards of the environment and take great care to preserve and protect the planet’s natural resources. These core values are evident in their Seed to Seal® philosophy, which promotes sustainable farming and sourcing practices, while enabling them to produce the purest, most potent essential oils in the world.

WHAT DOES YOUNG LIVING DO WITH THE LEFTOVER MATERIAL FROM OIL DISTILLATION?

The remaining material from oil distillation is used in compost.

WHAT IS YOUNG LIVING’S POLICY REGARDING GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS (GMOS)?

Young Living takes pride in utilizing the highest quality botanicals for its essential oils and oil-infused products. Every effort is made to ensure that the ingredients in their products are the purest and most potent available. Young Living goes to great lengths to formulate and use non-GMO (genetically modified organism) sources for its products whenever they are both verifiable and available. Although in the majority of cases they are able to certify that Young Living product ingredients are non-GMO, there are instances when sourcing and manufacturing constraints require the use of botanicals and materials that are uncertified or untraceable back to a verifiable non-GMO source. In addition, there are no clear guidelines on unified labeling standards from U.S. government agencies regarding non-GMO labeling. Young Living reaffirms their commitment to offering safe, effective, and high-quality products to their customers and members around the world. They are continuously researching ways to provide the highest quality and most natural products for their members.

ARE YOUNG LIVING PRODUCTS TESTED ON ANIMALS?

Young Living has a policy against testing the efficacy or safety of its products on animals. Young Living’s products are formulated to be safe for nearly all users, and animal testing is neither required nor performed in their product development process.

HOW DOES YOUNG LIVING ENSURE THAT ITS PRODUCTS DO NOT CONTAIN HEAVY METALS?

All raw ingredients used in Young Living products are tested for contaminants, including heavy metals, and must meet strict specifications.

WHY SHOULD I BUY FROM YOUNG LIVING INSTEAD OF OTHER ESSENTIAL OIL COMPANIES?

It does seem like a new essential oils company pops up every day, doesn’t it?

I can’t speak to the quality of other companies, but I can say that Young Living was the only company in my research of essential oil companies that could answer all of my questions about purity in a way that was satisfactory to me.

Young Living is the only company that has their own farms (in the regions where the plants should be grown), could absolutely guarantee that no pesticides or herbicides were used in the growing of any of their oils (they use essential oils for pest control and they do all of the weeding by hand), has their own testing equipment (they do both in-house and 3rd party testing, and use many different testing methods not just GC/MS which only tests for certain chemicals, not whether those chemicals are synthetic or not), and only uses the first distillation of oils instead of adding chemicals to get more out of the plant.

Young Living also is the only company that is directly in charge of essential oil farming operations. Every other company I researched goes through some kind of an “oil broker” to buy their oils. They have to trust that the oil broker is telling the truth, who has to trust that the essential oil distilleries are telling the truth, who have to trust that the farmers are telling the truth about what they say they are doing.

With Young Living, you just have to trust one company instead of several.

I feel like it’s a trust step either way (anyone could be lying) but I felt the most comfortable trusting Young Living since they are a full-disclosure company. Anyone can visit the farms, participate in the harvesting and distillation, view the Young Living labs, and see the entire process. That’s not an option with any other company.

DOES YOUNG LIVING ONLY SELL ESSENTIAL OILS?

The answer to this one was surprising to me when I first got my starter kit! Young Living actually has an entire line of personal care products, supplements, meal replacements, energy drinks, and more! Almost every product incorporates essential oils (for example, frankincense is absolutely wonderful in facial products), but there’s a wide variety of products available.

WHY NOT AMAZON OR STORE-BRAND OILS?

Adulterated Oils. The purity of essential oils is vital to not only their effectiveness, but their safety as well. Essential oils are rich in molecules that help carry oxygen, nutrients, and other substances through the cell membranes. Combine essential oils with impure or toxic substances, and they will take those poisons right into the cells of your body. Not only that, but unsuspecting consumers may apply oils only to find that the supposedly pure essential oil irritates because it contains added chemicals and components that are irritating to the skin.

Instead of experiencing the benefits of wholesome essential oils from Young Living, consumers may instead be poisoning themselves unknowingly, or decide that essential oils don't work because they tried using inferior essential oils.

Red flag that your Essential Oils may be tainted
Bargain prices - $9.00 for 1/2 oz. of "pure, organic" lavender oil
or
$25.00 for "pure" frankincense

Young Living Essential Oils does not authorize any of its distributors to sell on online sites like Amazon, eBay or Etsy. So, if you’re buying from those sites, you’re likely buying products that have been tampered with or diluted. Did you know that you can buy unopened, tamper-proof tops for pennies to put onto an already opened bottle? There is no guarantee that what you’re getting is truly 100% pure Young Living oils unless you order direct from youngliving.com.
