Let's continue our discussion on chakras and essential oils by exploring why you should care! These swirling wheels of energy correspond to massive nerve centers in the body. Each of the seven main chakras contains bundles of nerves and major organs as well as our psychological, emotional, and spiritual states of being. Since everything is moving, it’s essential that our seven main chakras stay open, aligned, and fluid. If there is a blockage, energy cannot flow. Think of something as simple as your bathtub drain. If you allow too much hair to go into the drain, the bathtub will back up with water, stagnate and eventually bacteria and mold will grow. So is too with our bodies and the chakras. A bathtub is simple; it’s physical so the fix is easy. Keeping a chakra open is a bit more of a challenge, but not so difficult when you have awareness. Since mind, body, soul, and spirit are intimately connected, awareness of an imbalance in one area will help bring the others back into balance. Take for example, a wife, who has recently lost her husband. She develops acute bronchitis, which remains in the chest, and then gets chest pains each time she coughs. The whole heart chakra is affected in this case. If she realizes the connection between the loss and the bronchitis, healing will occur much faster if she honors the grieving process and treats that as well as the physical ailment.
Where do I start?
Clearing the chakras begins with the foundation. The first three chakras are the chakras of Matter, starting at the base of the spine. They are more physical in nature. We need to start at the base - or the Root Chakra - on this journey to begin balancing. Here’s a brief overview of the three chakras of matter before we dive deep into the first one on it’s own.
First Chakra: The Muladhara is the chakra of stability, security, and our basic needs. It encompasses the first three vertebrae, the bladder, and the colon. When this chakra is open, we feel safe and fearless. We feel supported, a sense of connection and safety to the physical world, and grounded. ***The lesson of this chakra is self-preservation; we have a right to be here.***
Second Chakra: The Svadhisthana Chakra is our creativity and sexual center. It is located above the pubic bone, below the navel, and is responsible for our creative expression. When this chakra is balanced, we have an ability to take risks, we are creative, we are committed. We are passionate, sexual and outgoing. ***The lesson of this chakra is to honor others.***
Third Chakra: The Manipura Chakra means lustrous gem and it’s the area from the navel to the breastbone. The third chakra is our source of personal power. When this chakra is balanced, we feel self-respect and self-compassion. We feel in control, assertive, confident. ***The lesson of this chakra is self-acceptance.***
First Chakra / Root
The Root Chakra, or the Muladhara is the chakra of stability, security, and our basic needs. It encompasses the first three vertebrae, the bladder, and the colon. When this chakra is open, we feel safe and fearless. We feel supported, a sense of connection and safety to the physical world, and grounded. ***The lesson of this chakra is self-preservation; we have a right to be here.***
The Root Chakra is often associated with the color red. Red symbolizes life, vitality, endurance, and appetite – the very drivers of our survival and existence as beings within the universe.
How do we know if the Root Chakra is blocked or unbalanced? Feelings of loneliness and insecurity, lack of confidence, spacey, feeling unsafe, digestive/excretion issues, and/or experiencing times of instability or change.
Suggested Essential Oils to use with balancing the Root Chakra include: Cypress, Ginger, Cinnamon Bark, Sandalwood, Valor, Abundance, Grounding, Vetiver, Myrrh, Patchouli, Sacred Mountain and Nutmeg. Diffuse and/or apply to base of spine and/or bottom of feet. (Select one or a combination that you are drawn to - there is no right or wrong answer!)
Root Chakra Balancing Recipe: 1 drop Vetiver + 2 drops Myrrh + 6 drops Sacred Frankincense + 4 drops Ylang Ylang + 1-4 small Red Jasper pebbles (optional). Combine ingredients in a small 2 oz spray bottle with distilled or bottled water or into a 5 ml glass bottle with carrier oil. Apply to Root Chakra as needed.
Balancing tips: Meditate outside, sitting on the ground to connect with the earth for this practice. Focus on yoga asanas (poses) that focus on grounding your body. Take a walk in nature. Practice while utilizing the color red, or incorporating a gemstone over the chakra area using a gemstone specific for balance of the Root Chakra: bloodstone, onyx, obsidian, hematite, or tigers eye.
Affirmation / I am connected to all that is around me, this connection gives me a strong foundation and does not hold me back. Security and stability in life allow me to move with both confidence and connection to who I am.
Second Chakra / Sacral
Moving on to the Second Chakra – Sacral. Located just above the Root Chakra, the Sacral Chakra deals primarily with our ability of acceptance, connection, creativity, and sexual health. It deals with our ideals of enjoyment and pleasure. It is located in the lower abdomen, just below the navel. This position connects it to our sense of abundance and well-being. It can greatly affect the physical energy of the body, and when it falls out of balance, one can feel lethargic, tired and mundane. When this chakra is balanced, we have an ability to take risks, we are creative, we are committed. We are passionate, sexual and outgoing.
The Sacral Chakra is associated with the color orange. Orange reflects a feeling of openness and changing (consider the changing tones of color in the fall – almost all pass through orange). Orange energy is also very sensual, and is able to transform mundane energy into more powerful, bright energy.
Tips for Balancing your Sacral Chakra. Locate it first - Lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel and two inches in. Spend time near or in the water. Practice positive affirmations – “I love life” and “I know that I deserve goodness and joy” are two examples. Practice fluid, changing yoga poses (Seated pelvic circles, butterfly pose, cobra pose). Hula hooping, spinning, and other motion driven exercises stimulate this chakra. Practice while utilizing the color orange, or incorporating a gemstone over the chakra area using a gemstone specific for balance of the Sacral Chakra: carnelian, red garnet, red jasper, red and brown aventurine, ruby.
Suggested Essential Oils to use with balancing the Sacral Chakra include: Ylang Ylang, Clary Sage, Rose, Rosemary, Patchouli, Jasmine, Cedarwood, orange, tangerine, geranium, Peace & Calming, Harmony, Inner Child, and Forgiveness; diffused and/or applied slightly below the navel.
Sacral Balancing Recipe: 7 Drops Orange + 4 drops Ylang Ylang + 2 drops Neroli + 1-4 Carnelian pebbles (optional). Combine ingredients in a small 2 oz spray bottle with distilled or bottled water or into a 5 ml glass bottle with carrier oil. Apply to Sacral Chakra as needed.
Affirmation / I am a sensory being full of creative potential. I embrace life with passion and enjoy plunging into joy and happiness. My senses are alive, aware, and connected.

Third Chakra / Solar Plexus
The Solar Plexus most common chakra to be out of balance. This chakra is located about two inches above the navel at the diaphragm of the body. Here, this chakra connects us to discipline, desire and gut instincts. It affects the sense of power and comfort one has with their surroundings, and when it is out of balance, the chakra can affect our sense of certainty. Deals with willpower, and is blocked by shame. When this chakra is balanced, we feel self-respect and self-compassion. We feel in control, assertive, confident.
The Solar Plexus Chakra is associated with the color yellow. The color represents vibrance, youthful, optimism and energy. At the same time, like a hot yellow sun, the color represents knowledge and wisdom. It’s connected to introspection, intellect and guided autonomy.
How do you know if your Solar Plexus Chakra is Unbalanced? Weak concentration. Poor memory. Uncentered, uneasy feeling. Skin issues. Fatigue. Colon Issues. Poor self-worth, self-esteem. Low self-confidence.
Tips for balancing the Solar Plexus Chakra: Locate it: Upper abdomen in the stomach area. Bask in sunlight. Start a bonfire (safely) and sit around it with friends. Talk a walk in the sun. Meditate and practice metacognition (think about how you think). When you meditate on the solar plexus, your focus should be on connecting with your personal power. Practice while utilizing the color yellow, or incorporating a gemstone over the chakra area using a gemstone specific for balance of the Solar Plexus Chakra: amber, quartz, topaz, aragonite, citrine, golden calcite, yellow sapphire.
Suggested Essential Oils for Use with Balancing the Solar Plexus Chakra: Myrrh, Frankincense, Balsam Fir, Lemon, Juniper, Basil, Lavender, Bergamot, Geranium, Ginger, Lemongrass, Harmony, Sacred Mountain, Acceptance, Release. Diffuse or apply to upper abdomen, stomach area.

Combine ingredients in a small 2 oz spray bottle with distilled or bottled water or into a 5 ml glass bottle with carrier oil. Apply to Solar Plexus Chakra as needed.
Affirmation / I love and accept myself. I am willing to stand up for myself in confidence for that which I believe. I have the freedom to make my own choices in life with appreciation of my sense of self. I am connected to the source of all power and it flows through me to encourage the power of others.
